こちらでは誕生会での定番である、ピニャータ。

大きな張子の人形の中にはキャンディーがどっさり詰まっていて、それを目当てに、子供達みんなで頑張って割ります。

キャンディーを集め終わったら、次はケーキの時間。

ハッピーバースデーの歌を歌って、ろうそくを吹き消したら、自家製のチョコレートケーキを、15人で 食べます。

そして最後はプレゼントの出番。 ひとりずつ「お誕生日おめでとう」の言葉とともに、山ほどのプレゼントを貰って、帰路に着きました。

Tecun Uman was the last ruler of the Quiché people, in the highlands of what is now Guatemala. According to the Kaqchikel annals, he was slain by Spanish Conquistador Don Pedro de Alvarado while waging battle against the Spaniards on February 20, 1524.

On February 20th every year all the school children in Guatemala dress up in traditional clothing and march thru the town followed by a party at the school. Jay is fashionably dressed in the style of clothing from San Antonio. A small village located on the shores of Lake Atitlan.

2月20日はグアテマラの英雄テクン・ウマンを祝う祭日。
幼稚園ではその日、子供達に伝統衣装を着せ、街をパレードします。

湖の周囲に住む先住民族の衣装は、村によってデザインが異なっていて、それぞれに選んだ村の民族衣装を付けた子供達の行列は、それは色とりどりで華やか。

ジェイは、サンアントニオという、パナハチェルから２つお隣にある湖畔の村の衣装を着ました。

As most things in Guatemala revolve around children so does Carnival. The streets are filled with costumed children through out the day as all the schools march thru the town.

The tradition here is to smash eggs filled with confetti on each others head. Many of the older children skip the confetti part and smash fresh eggs on their victims heads shortly there after a hand full of flour to the head. Quite messy but it is all in fun.

2月28日はカーニバルの日。

親たちが思い思いに作った衣装を着て、子供達が街をパレードします。ジェイはもちろんアンパンマン！

目立つことが大嫌いなジェイは始終不機嫌のまま、約30分のパレードは終了。

幼稚園の敷地に帰って後も、コスチューム審査のため、校庭をぐるぐるダンスさせられてジェイはますます不機嫌に。

でもその後には、カーニバルにつき物の、タマゴ投げ遊びが始まって、これは相当楽しかったらしい。

タマゴは、中身を抜いて殻だけ乾燥させたのに着色して、中に紙ふぶきを詰めたもので、これを誰かれ構わず頭から掛けて周ります。
